On November 7-8, BRIGHT Network and China CDC Global Public Health Center co-hosted Global Public Health Program Planning and Scientific Research Practice Training Workshop featuring remarks from Feng Cheng, Assistant Dean and PI of BRIGHT Network, and Xiaopeng Qi, Acting Director, Center for Global Public Health, China CDC. The lecture sessions were delivered by Kun Tang, Associate Professor, Tsinghua Vanke School of Public Health; Hong Chen, Project Director, China-US CDC Collaboration Program, Center for Global Public Health, China CDC; Sue Lin Yee, Deputy China Country Director, US CDC; Feng Tan, Director, Department of Academic Publication, China CDC; Jinkou Zhao, Senior Specialist for Impact and Evaluation, Global Fund; Lili Wang, Head of Communication and Sustainability, World Diabetes Foundation; Yanjun Liu, Associate Professor, China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing); and Mengge Zhou, Assistant Researcher, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.

A total of fifty participants included BRIGHT Network members from Myanmar, Tanzania, Ghana, Egypt, and Ethiopia, as well as investigators and program management staff from China CDC. The training equipped participants with the knowledge and skills needed to design and implement global health programs with the highest quality, and kept participants updated with the best practice and latest research findings in global health area.

Participant Angela Shija from Tanzania National Institute of Medical Research, Year 2014 IMPH alumni, stated: “I have enjoyed professor Cheng’s presentation, though I could not read the slides in Chinese. I was able to follow everything. The workshop was good. It was like refresher IMPH course and great to know China’s contribution on global health.”

Being able to share and learn from similar experiences in building up local capacity in developing countries has been shown to be a crucial element of success in implementing global health programs in a complex environment. This training workshop offered opportunities for BRIGHT Network to connect with global health champions in China, to learn lessons from China-Africa public health collaboration, and to provide a practical set of guidelines.
